Home Decorating Mistakes to Avoid

Every now and then, it’s fun to visualize a new vibe for your home and mix things up a bit. From your furniture to your walls and every inch in between, the design options are endless in your new Sego home. But before you open the paint can or hit “buy” on that patterned sofa, take a look at a few design trends and mistakes to leave in the past, and get inspired by fresh, modern takes for your new home in Utah!

Not Having a Budget: Without a budget, you might spend too much in one area or end up with an incomplete room. Make sure to have a concrete budget along with a list of items to complete to make everything easier.

Mixing Too Many Patterns: Less is more! A good rule of thumb is to stick to 1 to 2 patterns per room. Otherwise, too many patterns could create a busy, crowded look that’s not so appealing…

Themed Rooms: These kinds of rooms (i.e. a children’s playroom or TV/entertainment room) add fun energy to your home, but they should never be a main room. The most important thing is to make sure that your themed room fits with the overall vibe and decor of your home.

Accent Walls: An overwhelming color on the wrong wall can negatively impact an entire room. Make sure that you choose a strong focal point (i.e. the wall behind your bed or the wall in the living room behind the sofa), along with an appealing color.

Over-Accessorizing: It’s understandable to want to display all of your favorite items at once, but this can crowd your space (and take the eye away from the room’s beauty). Incorporate a few accessories in a room at a time.

Pushing Everything Against the Wall: The goal is to make your living area feel inviting, not empty. Instead, group furniture together in a functional arrangement and ground it with a rug and coffee table.

Mismatched Furniture: Although professional designers can pull off this tricky trend, it’s best to select and use similarly designed furniture. If you still need to fill empty space, incorporate decor that works with that style.

Dated TV and Electronics: It’s easier (and cheaper) than you think to mount a new flat-screen TV or place it on a stylish credenza… and a new, updated look makes relaxation time more enjoyable!
