Five Ways to Keep Your Utah Neighborhood Safe

Unlike years ago, many parents do not feel comfortable allowing their children to play outside without any adult supervision. With the changing times, parents are keeping a closer eye on their children, and the close community found in neighborhoods years ago can be lacking in these modern times.

The first step to raising your children in a safe neighborhood begins with purchasing a home in in a safe community, like the homes for sale in the Daybreak community. Ensuring a safe atmosphere in your neighborhood begins with taking the precautionary measures to ensure that your children are protected.

Here are five ways to keep your neighborhood safe:

1. Get to Know Your Neighbors

A great way to secure the safety of your neighborhood is to take the time to get to know your neighbors, especially if you are new to the area. Knowing your neighbors creates a communal bond within the neighborhood, allowing for you and your neighbors to keep an eye out on any suspicious activity.

Additionally, knowing who lives around you can help in the event you are going out of town. If any neighbors see something amiss, they will be more likely to intervene since they know you and your family.

2. Outdoor Landscaping

Homes that are well-cared for can help deter crime. Not only does a well-manicured front look nice, it also helps prevent burglars from hiding out behind overgrown bushes and trees. An area that can be problematic to crime is a vacant lot or abandoned home. If there is a vacant lot in your neighborhood or an empty home, consider getting together with your neighbors and cleaning up the area.

3. Street Lighting

One of the best ways to improve the safety of your neighborhood is to keep the street lighting as bright as possible. While street lamps provide a good deal of light over the street and sidewalks, homes can still be left in the dark. Take the time to replace lights to the outside of your home, such as lights on the garage, landscape lighting, and in the backyard. If you notice any street lamps that are broken, call the city as soon as possible to get it fixed.

4. Get Outside

If your neighborhood is a flurry of activity during the day and into the evening, most burglars will not even think about casing your street, for there are too many prying eyes. Take walks with your family or your dog, allow your kids to play outside while you are caring for the lawn, or organize a monthly neighborhood barbecue.

5. Police Department

Get to know the local police department, and let them know you are invested in keeping your neighborhood safe. If you see cars speeding down the street or blowing through stop signs, ask the department to drive-through the neighborhood more often to keep it safe.

These five tips can help you keep your neighborhood safe and secure.
